Pub Crawl in Hull:
The Grafton and othersA marginally
grotty public house on Grafton Street (70 Grafton street is Paul's old address, note the
close walk), which you'll find about half way down Beverley Road on the left. Beverley
road is very long and runs north from the town centre. Along the Beverley road area are a
number of pubs frequented by many of the TBS lads including the Focastle & Firkin
(Once called The Mainbrace) and the Haworth Arms.
Just before Grafton street is Queens road, At the
bottom of which is the Queens Pub where they also visit often. In the town centre is
Queens Gardens and Queen Victoria Square where some filming on the Pumpkin video was done.
On the Pumpkin video Dave Rotheray talks about Queens
Gardens and tells us that some kind of "instrumental song about Queens Gardens will
be on the next single." We're still waiting.
Letter From Ameri(k)a
I am an American who spent an exchange year in Hull
back in 1985-1986. Hull has about 250,000 residents. Unemployment is high (was when I was
there and I can't
believe it's changed). Around 20-25%, a casualty of the Iceland wars when fishing
boundaries were forced in.
It sits on the North Sea and is a good spot to catch
a ferry to the continent. There are not many US tourists who make it to Hull. Therefore,
my experience is it is a wonderful place for Americans to visit. There were probably 25 of
us on exchange, and we were likely the only Yanks in the city that year.
The English often joke about Hull having the 2nd
most bombs fall on it in WWII due to the shipping port, and never quite rebuilding the
city.
When I was in Hull, music was truly incredible.
Between the Fine Young Cannibals dominating the charts with Johnny Come Home, Suspicious
Minds and Blue and the Housemartins chipping in with Happy Hour, and Think For A Minute.
There was also Everything But the Girl who had charted the year before ( I believe). I had
the time of my life there. (Karl) |
