The Beautiful South
and The Housemartins |
When TBS was formed, PD
Heaton was quoted as saying (paraphrased) : "We
are not going to be the Housemartins. If someone in the crowd shouts 'Do Happy
Hour', we'll go 'Right, that's one song fewer we're going to do tonight' "
-- M. McManus
On the Leeds Irish Centre CD (a private bootleg
circulated to friends of the band), one of the tracks is simply PD taunting the crowd into
shouting for HAPPY HOUR.
PD spends about 10 minutes insulting the crowd before
finishing off saying the line:
"Wouldnt' I just love to sing that bastard.
You've had your fucking hour and I've had mine . . . It's nice to hear some new tunes
isn't it?"
"Are you doing the same job you were doing fucking
10 years ago?"
This style of audience baiting was common during the
encores of the FOUL LIZARD tour.

PRS Cheques |
PRS stands for
"Performing Rights Society". PRS cheques are the royalty cheques a songwriter
gets. Hence, in "Song for
Whoever", Dave is thrilled not to be getting welfare cheques from his girlfriends, as
I would be, but instead that he gets royalites from the songs he writes about them.

Danielle Steele |
TBS has never performed a HM
song -- except "Danielle Steele" which was never released as a HM track but was
written during that time -- D. King |
|
Runners Up |
. . . is the vocal
version of what became "The Rising of Grafton Street." The lyrics where dropped by the band during the recording of the
song in the studio. The only two recordings which appear to still exist are the Choke demo
recordings and a rehearsal room recording.
This track is available on a sometimes available
cassette distributed by an LFW member named, mysteriously, "Jen"
Other unrelease tracks include "Let's Do it
Again" and "Fame" |
|
Briana Corrigan's
first band |
Briana was once in a band
called The Anthill Runaways, formed in Newcastle when Briana was at
University and working as a barmaid at a local pub called "The Strawberry," just
off St. James' Park. TAR never released
any albums, other than a odd demo tape as they toured the local pubs.
No surprise, the demo is not something Briana has been
willing to circulate.

Fatboy Slim |
From the Music Blvd's Spin
Magazine "Exposure- Loves and Hates" section, In the Loves category: "FATBOY SLIM, formerly of the Housemartins, Beats
International, and Mighty Dub Katz, Norman Cook is the drinking man's DJ, kicking
happy-hour techno-funk that never fails to insult your intelligence. In a good way, of
course." and makes mention of a new album, Rockafeller Skank due out June 9,1998.

0898 |
In the U.S. the equivalent to
0898 Beautiful South would be 1-900-BEAUTIFUL SOUTH. 0898 was the prefix used for all types of pay calls used for all
sorts of purposes but probably most infamously as phone sex lines
This prefix is no longer used |

Mini Correct
(Demo version)
(b-side Good as Gold CD1) |
Was recorded before Jacqui
joined the band, in Sheffield at Coggies party. Three
male singers were Paul, Dave, and "Coggy".
Don't ask me who Coggy is. |

Why does "Song
for Whoever" have an extended version on Welcome to... (and Live), and not on the
single and COUTC? |
They cut it down for the
single to make it more radio friendly (The original is 6 minutes long). COUTC has the
short version since it's a singles collection. Similarly, We Are Each Other, I'll Sail
This Ship Alone, LetLove Speak Up Itself, and Prettiest Eyes are represented by the single
version rather than the album version on COUTC. --

|
Alright, smarty, If
COUTC has the single versions what about 36D and Bell Bottomed Tear? |
COUTC has the promo version
of 36D (the UK single was longer) and the single version of Bell Bottomed Tear (the UK
promo was shorter)? |
|
Was Hugh in Prison? |
Yes. He became obsessive
about a man who he felt stole 10,000 pounds from him, stalked him, and ultimately hit him
in the head with an axe. When he was
found roaming Hull City Centre covered in blood, the police politely asked him to stop by
their office for some tea.

What does "if
you pull a two and a six" in Domino Man mean? |
Fredmens thinks it means
"2 and 6 means a 2-seater with 6-cylinders.(a sportscar)" Not everyone agrees. As a matter of fact, it seems a lot more
likely to have somthing to do with dominoes. |

What can A. Harrison
tell us about the 1995 tour series? |
The absence of Jackie, who
was pregnant at the time. The audience at the first Manchester gig went wild when Jackie
(who lives nearby) came on and sang a few songs. The 'Rotheray Can't Fly' incident at the NEC in Birmingham,
after which they had to engage a bloke called Spike to play guitar at the second
Manchester gig, prior to which Damon Butcher had worked through the night to write out the
music (obviously TBS are not too hot on contingency management) - he needn't of bothered
because Spike seemed to be having a bit of trouble reading Damon's transcription |
